You open a PDF and spot a typo, an old phone number or a date that needs updating. PDFs aren’t built to be edited like a Word file, so changing a single word can feel harder than it should. The good news: you don’t need paid software. In this guide you’ll learn three free ways to change text in a PDF online, right in your browser.

Why is text in a PDF hard to change?
A PDF is designed to look the same on every device. To do that, it stores each piece of text at a fixed position on the page, more like a printed sheet than a document you type into. That’s great for sharing, but it means there’s no “click and retype” like in a word processor.
There’s also a second type of PDF: scanned PDFs. These are really just pictures of pages, so the computer doesn’t see any text at all until it’s recognized with OCR (more on that below).
Which method you use depends on what you need to change:
- The same word appears several times → use Find & replace (Method 1)
- One line or a short sentence → cover it with whiteout and type new text (Method 2)
- The PDF is a scan or photo → run OCR first, then edit (Method 3)
Method 1: Use Find & replace
This is the fastest way to fix a name, date or number that’s repeated on a page.
- Open the free PDFCloudy PDF editor and click Choose PDF file (or drag your PDF onto the page).
- Click Find & replace in the toolbar.
- Type the text you want to change in Find, and the new text in Replace with. Tick Match case if capital letters matter.
- Click Find to highlight the next match, then Replace to change it, or Replace all to change every match on the current page.
- Repeat on other pages if needed, then click Apply changes to download your new PDF.
Tip: if Find doesn’t find anything, the page is probably scanned. Jump to Method 3.
Method 2: Cover the old text with whiteout and type over it
Whiteout works just like correction tape on paper. It’s ideal for changing an address, a price or a single sentence.
- Open your PDF in the PDFCloudy editor.
- Select the Whiteout tool and draw a box over the text you want to remove.
- Select the Text tool and click inside the white area.
- Type your new text. Choose the font that looks closest to the original (Helvetica, Times New Roman or Courier) and adjust the size until it blends in.
- Click Apply changes and download the edited PDF.
Good to know: whiteout hides text visually, but it isn’t meant for removing confidential information. For confidential details such as account numbers, cover them with Redact PDF and then run the file through PDF to PDF/A, which flattens each page into an image so the hidden text can no longer be copied.
Method 3: Edit a scanned PDF with OCR
If your PDF came from a scanner or a phone camera, the “text” is really an image. OCR (optical character recognition) reads that image and turns it into real text you can edit.
- Open the scanned PDF in the PDFCloudy editor. If a page looks scanned, the editor will offer to run OCR.
- Click OCR and choose OCR current page or OCR all pages.
- When it finishes, click the recognized text to edit it, or use Find & replace as in Method 1.
- Click Apply changes to download your PDF.
OCR works best on clear, straight scans. If you only need searchable text and not edits, try the OCR PDF tool.
When should you convert to Word instead?
The methods above are perfect for small fixes. If you need to rewrite whole paragraphs or change the layout, it’s usually easier to convert the PDF to Word, make your edits there, and then turn it back into a PDF with Word to PDF.
Tips for clean-looking edits
- Zoom in before you place new text so you can line it up exactly.
- Match the font size to the text around it. Even a small difference stands out.
- Use Undo freely. Nothing changes in your file until you click Apply changes.
- Keep your original. PDFCloudy creates a new PDF for download and leaves your original file unchanged.

Frequently asked questions
Can I change text in a PDF for free?
Yes. PDFCloudy’s online editor is free and works in your browser, so there’s nothing to install.
Do I need Adobe Acrobat to edit a PDF?
No. For everyday fixes like typos, dates and names, a free online editor does the job.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
PDFCloudy processes your PDF in your browser whenever possible, and OCR runs in your browser too. See our privacy policy for details.
Why can’t I find the text I want to replace?
The page is most likely scanned, so it contains an image instead of text. Run OCR first (Method 3), then try again.
