Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account?
No account is needed to run this tool.
Are my files uploaded?
No. This tool runs in your browser, so your file is processed on your own device and is not uploaded to our server. The page only downloads the free code libraries it needs.
Should I check the downloaded file?
Yes. Open the result and confirm its pages and content before sharing or deleting your original.
When to password-protect a PDF
- Tax and finance: email tax slips, pay stubs or bank statements to your accountant.
- Contracts and quotes: share agreements with a client so only they can open them.
- HR and personal records: send offer letters, references or ID copies more safely.
- Shared links: add a layer of protection to files stored in cloud folders or sent by link.
Good to know before you protect
Protect PDF creates a flattened copy: each page is redrawn as an image and then locked with your password. Text can no longer be selected and form fields are removed, so fill in forms and finish any edits before you protect the file.
Keep your unprotected original in a safe place. PDFCloudy never sees your password, so it cannot be recovered if you forget it.
Choose a strong password: at least 12 characters with a mix of words, numbers and symbols. Send it to the recipient separately, for example by text message, never in the same email as the file.
Why protect with PDFCloudy
Your document and your password stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded, which is exactly what you want when the file is private enough to need a password.
More questions about protecting PDFs
What if I forget the password?
It cannot be recovered. Keep the original, unprotected file so you can create a new copy if needed.
Why can't I select text in the protected file?
The pages are flattened into images as part of the process. Keep your original if you need editable text.
Can I stop people from printing or copying?
This tool sets a password to open the file. It does not set separate print or copy restrictions.
How do I remove the password later?
If you know the password, use Unlock PDF to save an unlocked copy.
Can I make the file smaller or mark it as confidential?
Yes. Add a "Confidential" mark with Add Watermark and shrink it with Compress PDF, then protect it last.
